I. Purpose & Responsibilities:

  • The Cadet Chief Mate of the T/S State of Maine is charged with the responsibility (among others) of the safety of the vessel and those persons aboard her.  With the assistance of the Cadet Third Mate and other trained Second Class midshipmen, the Cadet Chief Mate uses E-Squad to carry out this responsibility.

  • Emergency Squad is organized and trained to respond to any emergency situation which may arise aboard the training ship during the annual summer training cruise.  The list of possible emergencies include but are not limited to;

      • Shipboard Fires

      • Damage Control

      • Oil Spill Response

      • Hazardous Material Response

      • Security Response

II. Emergency Squad Duties

  • Rapid, professional response to emergency situations

  • Conduct frequent drills to hone skills and improve procedures

  • Continued training programs

  • Maintenance and up-keep of emergency response equipment

  • Removal of discovered fire hazards

III. Organization

  • E-Squad is broken into three separate DC Lockers (damage control lockers) numbered 1 through 3.  For each locker there is one designated ships officer.  For DC lockers 1 and 2 there is at least two 2/C Midshipmen, one is designated as locker leader and the other serves as a hose team leader. For DC locker 3 there is at least one 2/C midshipman.  The licensed Chief Mate, Cadet Chief Mate, Cadet Third Mate and 4/C communicator are designated as “Command” personnel and report directly to a designated staging area.
